A 20 francs gold coin from the Third French Republic. These small, high-purity gold coins would have represented nearly a week’s work for the average Parisian. These coins are popularly known as “Roosters” due to the reverse design. The rooster is a national emblem of France-the rooster’s crowing at the dawn of each new day was considered a symbol of the victory of light over darkness and of good over evil. The bird also has strong Christian symbolism due to Christ’s prediction of Peter’s three denials before the rooster’s crowing.
