The reverse side of the coin features the coat of arms of Mexico, a golden eagle perched on a cactus, devouring a snake. The imagery is derived from an ancient Aztec legend – a god told the Aztecs to found a city on the spot where they saw an eagle eating a snake on a cactus – the city they founded on that spot is modern-day Mexico City.
