A 19th century 20 francs gold coin from the 2nd French Republic, dated between 1871-1898. These small, high-purity gold coins would have represented about a weeks’ work for the average Parisian. These coins are popularly called “Angels” because of the angelic figure featured on the coin’s reverse. The figure (as envisioned by the coin’s sculptor, Augustin Dupré) is actually not a traditional Christian angel, but rather a depiction of the ancient Roman personification of Genius. The design was first used in 1791, following the French revolution. The winged Genius is depicted writing the constitution of post-revolutionary France.
