Millie Bobby Brown auditioned for the role of Eleven multiple times — and she didn't stare, she just cried a lot.

"I didn't actually have to stare, I cried a lot in the audition. All I said was, 'It’s behind you!' and that was it. It was complicated, I auditioned multiple times. I auditioned once by myself, and then I auditioned on tape, I Skyped with the Duffers, and then I flew to L.A. and actually met Finn (Wolfhard) and the Duffers, and then I found out I had to cut all [my hair] off and I got the job." —Millie Bobby Brown

She didn't master the stare until later on, during filming — and once she nailed it, everyone knew.

"I don’t really know how I got 'the face.' I was just like, 'I've gotta be crazy. I've gotta look like a child, but scary.' And then when I did it, everybody was like, 'That’s the Eleven face.'" —M.B.B.

The first table read happened the day Brown cut her hair off, and she was covered in itchy hairs the whole time.

"It was actually that day. I got [my hair cut] and I was in the table read — you know how I didn't have any lines, all I said was, 'No, yes, Papa, yeah.' When you get your hair cut, it gets everywhere. And I was wearing my fluffy pajamas and it got everywhere and I was like, 'It’s everywhere!' [during] the whole read-through.'" —M.B.B.
